Fixing, Sealing Blush Thin 10.08.05

Blush Thin Machine Made Terracotta

APPEARANCE - Terracotta tiles are natural clay tiles, warm in colour and warm underfoot. Due to the variance in colour and shade and the fact that batches may vary, samples can only be considered as indicative of colour and texture.
TOLERANCES –Machine made Blush Thin Terracotta tiles are manufactured in such a way as to produce a uniform effect. Different sized tiles will vary in thickness.

CHARACTERISTICS – A predominantly light red to yellow terracotta showing strong blushing effects between the two colours, with a smooth uniform surface.

ACCEPTANCE - All the tiles must be inspected on delivery. The tiles are delivered in good faith without the individual inspection of each piece. Responsibility for the acceptance or rejection of any of the tiles lies with the purchaser or his agent prior to fixing or use. Fixing will be deemed to be acceptance of the goods. The tiles are supplied on the understanding that their nature is understood and accepted.

PREPARATION OF THE FLOOR - The sub floor and screed must be sound, dry and suitable for tiling. New floors and screeds must be allowed to dry thoroughly before tiling, in damp conditions this may take several weeks; otherwise the tiles may later be affected by moisture and efflorescence. When tiling on a timber floor it must be sound and free of movement. The floor should be covered with 6mm marine ply and screwed down at 20cm intervals, then primed. We recommend the use of a "flexi" additive in the adhesive and grout.

PREPARATION OF THE TILES - Mix the tiles from several packs to obtain the desired effect. Inspect each tile carefully for imperfections and reserve these for cutting. No claims will be accepted once the tiles are fixed.

TREATING THE TILES - Many types of terracotta tiles show a white powdery deposit on the surface, this is entirely normal. This should be treated with EFFLORESCENCE REMOVER, rinsed and allowed to dry thoroughly before sealing with Lithofin’s Terracotta Impregnator.

LAYING THE TILES - Spread the adhesive with a 10mm notched trowel and lay the tiles with approx. 10mm joint. Vary the width of the joint to take up any variation in the size of the tiles. Ensure that each tile is fully bedded in the adhesive and that there are no air pockets trapped underneath. Remove any adhesive that gets onto the surface of the tiles immediately using a clean wet sponge.

SEALING THE TILES - Apply a second coat of Lithofin Terracotta Impregnator evenly over the tiles. (We suggest the use of a paint roller, sponge for this operation)

JOINTING THE TILES - Joint the tiles making sure that the grout is worked well down into the joint and that there are no air pockets. Clean off any excess grout as you go. If any grout is found to have dried onto the tiles this can safely be removed by using brick acid as directed.

FINAL SEALING: We recommend the use of Lithofin Terracotta Sealant which should be applied uniformly with a sponge or roller on a clean surface. Please note that on average it is necessary to apply two to three coats to achieve a uniform appearance!!!!

Fixing, Sealing Saltillo Rojo Terracotta

Slatillo Rojo Hand Made Terracotta

APPEARANCE - Terracotta tiles are natural clay tiles, warm in colour and warm underfoot. Due to the variance in colour and shade and the fact that batches may vary, samples can only be considered as indicative of colour and texture.

TOLERANCES –Hand made Rojo Saltillo Terracotta tiles are manufactured in such a way as to produce a rustic effect. This results in a variation in dimensions and thickness; the width of the joint and the thickness of the adhesive should be sufficient to allow for this variation.

CHARACTERISTICS - It is usual in this type of tile for there to be chips, firing cracks and imperfections including stripy stratation of colours, these are indicative of Saltillo tiles.

This should be treated with EFFLORESCENCE REMOVER, rinsed and allowed to dry thoroughly before sealing with an initial coat of Terracotta Oil to prevent staining from adhesive during the initial laying process.

SEALING THE TILES -
Apply a second coat of TERRACOTTA SEALING OIL evenly over the tiles.
(We suggest the use of a paint roller, sponge or paintbrush for this operation)
Make sure that no tile is blotchy or streaky.
Rub off any excess oil within 30 minutes with a clean lint free cloth and white spirit. Leave
each coat to dry for at lease 8 hours, preferably overnight.
Remember, it is very important not to allow any oil to dry on the surface of the tiles, PLEASE NOTE: Due to certain additives in the sealing oil, cloths, sponges, etc. soaked in oil may spontaneously combust and should be destroyed immediately after use. Apply an initial coat of FARMHOUSE TERRACOTTA TOPCOAT GLOSS prior to grouting.

All grout joints must be allowed to thoroughly dry before applying the final topcoat of FARMHOUSE TERRACOTTA TOPCOAT GLOSS. This second coat will leave the tiles with a glossy appearance. If a more matt/silk finish is preferred, then the topcoat used should be our FARMHOUSE TERRACOTTA TOPCOAT MATT.

PLEASE NOTE…

WE DO NOT RECOMMEND THE USE OF ANY IMPREGNATORS ON SALTILLO AS THIS MAY/WILL CAUSE EXCESSIVE LIME POPPING ON THE SURFACE OF THE TILES.

MAINTENANCE - The floor should be brushed daily and washed regularly with clean water and a little mild soapy water. Do not use Flash or bleach, as this will destroy the sealant. We recommend regular use of Lithofin’s Easycare for the long-term maintenance of this flooring.

GENERAL - Any queries regarding the fixing and sealing of these tiles should be made to your supplier prior to fixing. Mistakes are virtually impossible to rectify.

Leave
each coat to dry for at lease 8 hours, preferably
overnight.
Remember, it is very important not to allow any oil
to dry on the surface of the tiles, PLEASE NOTE: Due to certain additives in the sealing oil, cloths, sponges, etc. soaked in oil may spontaneously combust and should be destroyed immediately after use.
Apply an initial coat of FARMHOUSE TERRACOTTA TOPCOAT GLOSS prior to grouting.

JOINTING THE TILES - Joint the tiles making sure that the grout is worked well down into the joint and that there are no air pockets. Clean off any excess grout as you go. If any grout is found to have dried onto the tiles this can safely be removed by using brick acid as directed.
